Cardozo's graduation ceremony for its eighth grade students is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. and the high school graduation will follow on Thursday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. Both ceremonies will be on the campus at Riverbank High, staged in the quad area.
Officials at Cardozo Middle School estimated the graduating class there at 120.
At Riverbank High, counselor Denny Carl said there are about 175 students graduating and the class includes three Valedictorians and one Salutatorian.
Valedictorians for the Class of 2008 are Brock Costalupes, Evan Gunther and Vania Leonardes; Salutatorian is Raquel Medina.
"There will be a welcome by ASB (Associated Student Body) President Janette Ruiz and Karina Duarte, the Senior class president," added Carl. "The opening address will be given by Raquel and Vania, the school board presents the diplomas and the farewell is given by Brock and Evan."
All four of the honorees are CSF, California Scholastic Federation, members and are true student leaders, said Carl.
"Like many schools, those who have a 4.0 GPA or above become a Valedictorian," he explained. "Our top two were Brock and Evan, they are both at 4.14 GPA."
Leonardes has a GPA of 4.0 and Medina finished up at 3.9.
"Brock and Evan have been nip and tuck through all the years, the GPA is based on seven semesters," Carl said.
Each has done Advancement Placement (AP) classes in calculus, literature and economics. Costalupes has participated in track and basketball and will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Gunther, headed for UC Berkeley, was a three-sport athlete for the Bruins, playing football, basketball and running track and field.
Leonardes, preparing to attend UC Davis, has been active in drama and also had three AP courses on her schedule, calculus, literature and economics. Medina, a standout tennis player for Riverbank High, will attend CSU Stanislaus and took AP classes in literature and economics, as well as taking part in the AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, program.
A ticket is required to attend the Riverbank High graduation ceremony.
Ceremonies for the district's Independent Study and Adelante continuation high school were staged on Tuesday, May 20.
