| Workmen refinish the gymnasium floor at Riverbank High to get it ready for the opening of school on Monday. The acrylic covering goes down as a liquid, which must be carefully brushed into place before it dries. The Bruins’ coming basketball season will probably be the last for the varsity team in the old gym as the new gym now under construction nearby is expected to be operational
by February.

Riverbank Unified School District's office telephone number is 869-2538, Riverbank High School 869-1891, Cardozo Middle 869-2591, California Avenue Elementary 869-2597, Rio Altura Elementary 869-3633 and Crossroads Elementary 869-2100. Most offices are open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Riverbank High, located at Patterson and Claus roads, has a new principal, Christine Facella, who transferred from Rio Altura to replace Ken Geisick who now serves as the interim district superintendent. Sean Ritchie and Rebecca Evans will continue to serve as assistant principals. Ritchie also now has part-time duties as principal of Adelante Continuation High School that is located on the RHS campus.
The only new teachers slated to start work at RHS are Kevin Hejnal who teaches mathematics and Holly Cortes who will do art instruction.
At Cardozo Middle School, located at Santa Fe and Fourth streets, Alice Solis continues as principal with assistant principal Craig Springer also returning. Solis noted a Back to School night is slated for Thursday, Aug. 7 in the gymnasium, starting at 5:45 p.m. for sixth graders and at 6 p.m. for the seventh and eighth grade students.
Among staff changes, longtime Cardozo teacher Debra Lagier has retired.
California Avenue School, located on California Avenue and Eighth Street, will turn 60 years old this year and is planning to combine a birthday ceremony with its Back to School Night and Book Fair on Aug. 20, said principal Laurie Sacknitz. While teaching assignments are still being worked out, it is known that Beth Perkins is transferring from Rio Altura to teach second grade at California Avenue this year.
Located in Riverbank, Crossroads School lies in the subdivision of that name at Prospectors Plaza and Saxon Way and caters mostly to that area's children but is administered by the Sylvan Unified School District.
Marti Reed is the principal of this school opened only a year ago. Her assistant principal is Vanessa Lind and office manager Ron Grim. There are two new teachers joining the staff; Christine Henke will teach fifth grade, track and Linda Fletcher takes kindergarten.
The school has set auditions on Aug. 18 for a Missoula Children's Theater production of "The Amazing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" which will be performed on Aug. 22 (and possibly again on Aug. 23) with 50 to 60 Crossroads students included in the cast.
