Riverbank’s cross country boys won the second Trans-Valley League meet on Wednesday with a dominating performance.

“The gap between our number one runner and our number five runner was just 13 seconds,” noted coach Monte Wood. “They all ran fantastic together. At the mile-and-a-half mark all of our top six runners were in a pack of about 11 runners. That usually doesn’t happen at the TVL meets.”

Over the last half of the race, Wood added, several of those athletes fell off pace, but the Bruins kept pressing.

“Ruben Paredez ended up second in the race and right behind him was Eric Wise. Diego Ruiz, Noah Glynn, and Michael Rodriguez finished out the top five,” said Wood. “Noah, Michael, and Eric broke the 18-minute barriers for 5k for the first time.”

Riverbank’s number six runner was sophomore Chris Martinez, who ran a 1:46 personal record for 5k in a time of 18:25.

“This team has great chemistry, and they work so well together,” Wood said. “With the win, they are guaranteed at least a co-TVL championship for the 2015 season. But they want to win it all and want to win a section title, so they still have their work cut out for them.”

On the girls side, it was a second place finish, the Lady Bruins finishing being Hughson.

“We aren’t used to that,” admitted Wood, who said Hughson won by five points. “Our one through three runners ran really well. Kim Ruvalcaba won the race with a time of 19:28 which is 30 seconds faster than last year for the TVL race #2.”

Stephanie Bernal and Lydia Hodges also set personal records on the course, but Riverbank’s fourth through sixth runners had a tough outing, and didn’t run very well.

“Elitania Rosas is battling injuries. We are just going to have to run better to win the league title,” Wood added of the girls. “We won the first race. Hughson won the second race. So whoever wins the last race of the year will win the TVL title. It will come down who wants it the most between now and October 28.”
