RHS Teams See Mixed Results, Fight Rain

Bruin teammates finish the two-mile r...

In a week that saw a mixture of sunny, rainy and windy weather that local athletes had to face, a variety of results made the score books.

TENNIS

Coach Bruce Edwards reported a winning match with Mountain House this past week, the Bruins emerging from the court victorious, 7-2. He said the win would leave the Bruins as officially Trans-Valley League champions, with a record of 7-0 so far in league action.

“There is one match remaining for us and the next best team in league, Escalon, has two losses already,” Edwards noted.

BASEBALL

Varsity baseball saw a split result against Hughson last week. On Tuesday, April 19, the Bruins played away, finishing with a 2-1 victory against the Huskies. At home on Thursday, the locals dropped a 6-0 three-hit shutout. The JV boys battled hard and played well defensively in their first game of the week but took a 7-3 loss to Hughson. No information was available for the Thursday game.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Bruin soccer team dropped a home loss to Escalon, 3-1, on Tuesday, but rebounded with a solid effort on the road to squeak by Mountain House with a 1-0 victory away on Thursday.

The JV girls fought to a 2-2 tie hosting Escalon but rolled to a 3-0 victory at Mountain House.

“These girls have absolutely been playing with the most passion I have ever seen in my life. They turned a program that was forgotten about into a powerhouse in the TVL in one season,” JV Coach Arturo Albor commented. “When we finished our game at Mountain House, we walked out with the 3-0 win. The resiliency and heart the girls played with was more than I can put into words. That brings our JV team record to five wins, one loss and two ties.”

TRACK AND FIELD

Both the girls and the boys teams won their league meet against Hilmar convincingly, according to Coach Monte Wood.

“We were without our top three distance runners due to injury, but we still won easily on Wednesday, April 20. The younger kids really stepped up and performed well,” Wood explained. “Valeria Aguiniga, Alexa Gutierrez, Diana Herra, Angelina Moreno, and Alysia Beecroft deserve a lot of credit for picking up the slack. Jenise Perryman also performed well. She is a star in the making. It seems whatever event we put her in, she picks it up easily and does well. She also has a great attitude.”

On the boys side, the coach said it was an overall great team effort for the Bruins.

“It is hard to pick out a few athletes who continue to shine because so many are performing at a high level. The one thing I am the most impressed with is that our senior boys are so focused. We still have big meets left, but if they continue to stay focused, and if we can remain healthy, we have a great chance of winning the TVL title for the first time since 2010.

“I am really impressed with this group of boys.”

This week, the Bruin squads compete against Mountain House and Modesto Christian.

“We hope that our depth can be the deciding factor,” Wood said.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Bruins hosted Hilmar on Friday, starting their game in light rain, and finished with partly cloudy skies. They scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and ended up with a commanding 13-6 win in regulation.

They’ll be away at Escalon and Ripon this week, then wrap up the home season during the first week in May, and end on the road at Hilmar.
