The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra, directed by Professor Anne Martin, presents a spring concert entitled “The Wild West and Outer Space” on Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto.

Tickets are $5 general admission and $1 for students and senior citizens, and are sold at the door beginning 90 minutes prior to the concert. Free campus parking is available for the evening in parking lots 104, 105, 106, and 108 to accommodate concert attendees.

The MJC Community Orchestra membership includes college students, high school students, teachers, local professional musicians, business owners, a farm manager, an engineer and a lawyer. The orchestra invites the community to celebrate music by attending the spring concert.

The evening opens with Elmer Bernstein’s Symphonic Suite, The Magnificent Seven, evoking an image of a vast and spacious western landscape. The next two works, both by American composer, Aaron Copland, describe two American folk legends, John Henry and Billy the Kid. The first half of the program ends with the joyful and celebratory, Hoedown from Rodeo, also by Aaron Copland.

For the second half of the concert, the MJC Orchestra moves to outer space with performances of Mars, The Bringer of War and Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity from Holst’s famous Orchestral Suite, The Planets.

The final piece on the program was chosen to honor all of the NASA astronauts. The music by James Horner from the film Apollo 13 features numerous trumpet solos.
