Railtown 1897 Hosting Virtual Volunteer Training
state park

In preparation to resume operations and in compliance with all state, city, and county guidelines, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown is seeking volunteers to kick off the 2021 season. California State Parks, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are now accepting applications for anyone interested in volunteering to help communicate the fascinating railroading history of the “Movie Railroad” in the beautiful Sierra foothills.

This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in sharing rail and/or movie history, wanting to become part of an operating train crew and/or connecting with a community of enthusiasts. Available volunteer positions include tour guides, train car hosts, greeters, ticket agents, stationmasters, operating train crew, and more. Interested volunteers are encouraged to attend three virtual volunteer training sessions happening on consecutive Saturdays: March 6, 13 and 20, 2021 at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. each day. Volunteer applications should be submitted by Friday, March 5. Volunteer on-site training is slated to begin on Saturday, April 3 (but could change if conditions warrant a delay). The worthwhile program offers an opportunity to support a local state historic landmark while learning more about California’s rich history, meeting new people, and developing lasting friendships with those who share similar interests.

No previous experience with railroads or public service is required, and recruitment is currently underway. Interested volunteers able to speak multiple languages are also highly encouraged to apply. At the virtual training sessions, prospective volunteers will have the opportunity to talk with Park staff and past volunteers to learn about the various positions that are available.

Railtown 1897 SHP is known for its century-old steam maintenance shops and train rides, including popular rides behind the famous “Movie Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3. In addition to weekend excursion steam trains (typically April through October), Railtown 1897 SHP offers daily tours, roving interpreters, and many special events as allowed by city, county, and state guidelines.

Benefits for volunteering at Railtown 1897 SHP include membership in the California State Railroad Museum Foundation, free admission to and train rides at Railtown 1897 SHP and at the California State Railroad Museum located in Old Sacramento State Historic Park, a variety of social activities (as allowed by city, county, and state guidelines), interesting training opportunities and guest speakers, discounts at the Depot Store, and participation in an annual volunteer recognition dinner. Interested volunteers can download a volunteer application at www.railtown1897.org or call 209-984-4408 and ask for Robert Reif, Park Interpreter I (robert.reif@parks.ca.gov) for more detailed information.
