The Stockton Art League’s juried art competition returns to the Haggin Museum this year with more than 100 new works by long-standing local artists and newcomers from around the country. The show opened April 7 and runs through May 15, 2022.

The original competition was conceived in 1951 to recognize, promote and reward excellence in Northern California art and was expanded in 2006 to include all of California, in addition to Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. It has grown since then to include artists throughout the United States, further enhancing the quality of work included in the show.

Nearly 1,000 works from hundreds of national artists were submitted for this show, and more than $5,000 will be awarded throughout varying mediums including acrylic, oils, water media, mixed media and graphics, sculpture, photography, and pastel. This year, the Stockton Art League has introduced photography as a new medium.

The Stockton Art League (SAL) is a group of people who are interested in and enjoy the world of art. SAL had its beginnings in 1936 as a critique session and later as a sketching group. Members include professional, semi-professional, amateur artists, and people who just enjoy its programs and exhibitions. SAL provides and promotes programs, workshops, classes, and activities that stimulate growth in individual members and encourage the exchange of ideas between members. In 2001, SAL opened a gallery space in Stockton’s Miracle Mile district, named Goodwin Gallery after its generous benefactor Elise May Goodwin.
