Friday was a big day for Margaret Kalas - she turned 100-years-old. She received a big birthday cake and celebrated with friends at the Riverbank Nursing Center where she has resided the last five years, then later went to another party at her daughter's house in Oakdale.

Born Aug. 3, 1907 in Youngstown, Ohio, Kalas at the age of eight moved with her family to Hungary but returned to the United States at 18, said her daughter Zolanda Vejar. She married Joseph Kalas whom she had met in Hungary. But it took him five years to earn enough money to come to the U.S.

Vejar was their only child. Joseph Kalas died in 1994. Margaret has three grandsons and two great grandsons.
