Five local off-duty firefighters of the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District paid their respects at a recent memorial ceremony for two Contra Costa County firemen who died trying to save an elderly couple from a burning house.
Captain Rick Bussell of Stanislaus Consolidated led a group of fellow firemen consisting of Paul Autry, Ryan Leighton, Jeremy Smith and Mike Avila who are all engineers. The truck they rode was the familiar No. 26 that is based at the Riverbank station.
"It is sad to be here because two firefighters lost their lives. But it is also an honor to celebrate the lives of two heroes. These firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice doing what they loved," said Bussell.
