True to its Spanish name that means "moving forward," the new Adelante Continuation High School was opened with a ribbon cutting on Oct. 10 and 60 students, three teachers and support staff moved in later in the week.

Occupying its own campus after spending 10 years in Riverbank High classrooms, the alternative education school is located on Seventh Street between the Riverbank Unified School District office and the city tennis courts.

It was designed by district architect Timothy Huff of Modesto and built by C.T. Brayton & Sons, Inc. of Escalon.

Riverbank Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Van Houten, Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Adelante Principal Daryl Camp, Associated Student Body President Ricardo Cardenas, Board Chairman Egidio "Jeep" Oliveira and other board members took part in the ceremony. Patricia O'Brien representing Senator Tom Berryhill also presented a plaque.

"A promise made and a promise kept," said Oliveira. "After this we will build the science laboratory at Cardozo (referring to another project funded by a local bond issue some years ago) .We will keep pressing forward ..."

"I am truly blessed," said Camp. "This is a special group of students. And I get to be an administrator and keep my hand in at teaching school."

"Everybody here is really excited about having our own campus," added Cardenas. "I plan to lead the way, graduate in February and go onto a college specializing in the arts."

Teachers assigned to Adelante include Elizabeth Medeiros, Carl Hughes and Fred Wood.

In thanking Huff, Brayton and all who contributed to bringing the project from plans to reality, Oliveira gave special recognition to Rick John, former director of maintenance, operations and transportation at Riverbank. John steered the project through the bureaucratic system in its early stages but left to take a job with the Escalon school district shortly before Adelante was opened.
