A Riverbank man riding an all terrain vehicle (ATV) on the highway was killed when struck by another vehicle just west of town on Wednesday night, Oct. 28.

Dale Shores, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office.

The crash occurred at about 9:40 p.m. just east of Coffee Road, said California Highway Patrol officials.

Shores was driving his 2006 ATV west on Highway 108 and for unknown reasons was at a near stop in the roadway, possibly trying to retrieve his dog that he had been exercising along the canal bank.

The other driver, a 17-year-old Modesto girl, driving a 2005 Lexus, was also driving west at about 55 mph when the front end of her vehicle hit the ATV, causing Shores to be thrown from the ATV onto the road and suffer fatal injuries.

The girl braked and stopped her vehicle in the roadway. She was uninjured. CHP officials did not release her name because she is a minor.

The CHP does not believe alcohol to be a factor in the collision. Witnesses said the ATV did not have its lights on at the time of the crash.
