One person was killed and another critically injured when their vehicle was struck by a big rig Friday morning, July 15 in Newman.

The name of the deceased has not been released pending next of kin notification.

The collision between the 2015 Toyota and a Peterbilt tractor truck happened just before 10:30 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Eastin and Stuhr roads, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Toyota, Rachel Norton, 22, of Riverbank and her female passenger were headed south on Eastin and had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection.

For an unknown reason, authorities said Norton pulled the Toyota out onto Stuhr, directly into the path of the oncoming big rig.

The driver of the big rig, identified as a 58-year-old man from Los Banos, had no chance to avoid the collision and struck the side of the Toyota.

The force of the impact sent the Toyota overturning off the roadway until it came to a rest on its wheels.

The passenger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Norton had sustained major injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center, said Newman Fire Station Chief Keith Bowen.

The big rig driver was not injured in the collision.

The intersection only has stop signs on Eastin and not Stuhr.

“People often underestimate how fast the vehicles are going on Stuhr, especially after getting off I-5,” Bowen said.

All parties were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

It’s unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the collision.

The collision remains under investigation.
