City Leads County In Unemployment

If you think there are more people here out of work than usual, you are right.

Figures for unemployment in Riverbank are among the worst in California, let alone Stanislaus County.

Riverbank had a 24.5 percent unemployment rate in November, Riverbank City Council members recently heard from Director of Economic Development & Housing Tim Ogden. The last reported rate for Stanislaus County was 17.2 percent and for California 12.3 percent.

Ogden went on to say that unemployment in Riverbank hit 25 percent six months ago, making it the 24th worst place in California to find a job.

That was according to state Department of Employment Development figures that are computed monthly for cities and counties.

Ogden was talking about how the coming transfer of the Army ammunition plant to a city-owned industrial park could eventually bring hundreds of jobs into the area.

These would be skilled and higher paying jobs as the area evolves from its original economy based on agricultural work and the railroad into one centered on services and industry.
