Riverbank officials invite the public to mark Memorial Day this year with the unveiling of a new war memorial and the placing of a plaque to honor fallen soldier, James Ray Layton, HM3.

The USAF Band of the Golden West from Travis Air Force Base will play and the Royal Neighbors of America, Chapter 9890, provide refreshments.

With all government and many private offices closed on Memorial Day, officials said this will be a day for the community to thank its veterans and offer condolences to the family of young James Layton, a U.S. Navy medical corpsman killed in combat in Afghanistan last September.

The Monday, May 31 ceremony is slated for 11 a.m. in front of the Riverbank Community Center at 3600 Santa Fe.
