Council Corks Wine Flow

Expecting her request to serve wine at the Shakespeare in the Park event to be rejected by the Riverbank City Council on Monday, Rio Arts Artistic Director Joey Huestis said her attempt was more of a trial balloon than anything but she was preparing to mount another campaign for next year's festival.

She acknowledged staff's objections that the site is an unfinished one at the far west of the park, security would be required and the city has a policy of no alcohol in parks, although staff is considering an exception for the opening of the Plaza Del Rio later this year.

However, she said, the festival needs to raise funds in some way or other in order to remain free of an admission charge. Also she has never known a Shakespearean festival at which wine was not served.
