A 47-year-old Riverbank man died at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto late Friday afternoon of injuries suffered in a head-on crash between his car and a school bus on State Route 108 between Eighth Street and Claus Road.

The name of the deceased was unavailable Monday afternoon because the Stanislaus County Coroner's office had been unable up that time to notify his next of kin.

The driver and occupants of the 2003 school bus suffered minor injuries and were treated at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, according to the California Highway Patrol report. They were identified as Mary Jane McClelland, 53, of Modesto, Nancy Ann Elwess, 60, of Modesto and Debbie Lee Branson, 50, of Ceres. There were no students on the bus at the time of the accident.

The deceased was driving a 1998 Chevy Cavalier eastbound on Highway 108 at an unknown speed while the school bus was westbound at about 35 mph, according to the CHP. The driver of the Cavalier allowed his vehicle to drift to the left, cross the double center lie and hit the school bus.

The bus driver applied the brakes and turned to the right in an attempt to avoid the Chevy but was unsuccessful. The two vehicles collided head-on and came to rest in the westbound lane.

The CHP report indicated that alcohol was believed to be a factor in the collision.

That section of the road was closed to traffic for about two hours while traffic was detoured around the accident scene by way of Claus Road and Eighth Street.
