A pedestrian was killed while crossing F Street in Oakdale on Sunday evening and the Riverbank driver that struck him was arrested a short time later.

Oakdale Police said the crash occurred at F Street and Third Avenue, when the 64-year-old pedestrian was crossing northbound in the crosswalk. The 2005 Mercedes that struck him was westbound on F Street (Highway 108) and fled the scene.

Authorities received information about the vehicle and it was found abandoned a short time later. Officers were then able to find the driver, identified as Gabriel Joseph Bocanegra, 24, of Riverbank. He was reportedly being picked up by his mother when officers located him. The car had been abandoned on Pindos Court, said police.

The accident occurred about 5 p.m. and the pedestrian – whose name had not yet been released by police – was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of his injuries. The block of F Street between Second and Third avenues was closed off for a few hours on Sunday while police conducted their investigation, and traffic was diverted around that area.

Bocanegra was taken into custody and arrested; he could face felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charges, among others. He was being held at Stanislaus County Jail on $50,000 bail. Police said he had minor injuries in the accident.
