Early Morning Fire Destroys Shed, Boat

A reported "barn fire" just outside Riverbank that prompted initial requests for mutual aid from neighboring departments including Escalon and also drew a response from an area television news crew early Friday morning did not amount to that big a blaze.

More like an open-sided shed than an actual barn, the wooden structure consisted of eight to 10 posts holding up a roof and the most expensive loss was an old and abandoned boat inside it, said Battalion Chief Paul Spani of the Consolidated Fire Protection District.

Escalon was requested to respond when the call first came in but they were canceled before arriving on the scene, once Stanislaus Consolidated crews discovered they were able to handle the fire and contain it themselves.

The roughly 4 a.m. blaze was on Adams Gravel Plant Road about 100 feet off Highway 108 just east of Riverbank.
