Mesa Verde Elementary Principal Laurie Sacknitz made a deal with her students. And she recently had to live up to her end of the bargain, even though it had her looking like a walking taco plate.
Her challenge was if the students could reach the book fair goal of selling 600 books, she would dress up like a taco during their lunch period. The students surpassed their goal and sold 642 books. Sacknitz was seen around campus in a sombrero and taco costume on Wednesday, May 14, honoring her deal with the students.
This book fair went on for five days at Mesa, starting on Monday, May 5 and ending on Friday, May 9. When each day’s sales were totaled up, it was a final tally of 642 books sold.
The Parent Teacher Club (P.T.C.) organized the book fair and Thursday they held an open house.
The P.T.C. has an executive board of directors that are all volunteers that have been elected and consist of President Lizbeth Nisperos, Vice President Yolanda Sanchez, Treasurer Mary Bento, Secretary Sharan Gray, and Parliamentarian Merry Joy Tan.
“Thursday was actually our best sale day because we had a lot of parents come, aunts, uncles, everybody was here and they all helped to buy the books,” expressed Nisperos. “I think our biggest thing, too, was we had a lot of support from our teachers, which we love.”
Nisperos explained that there are no membership fees for the P.T.C. and all parents are welcome to join.
“It’s (PTC) basically just to raise money for the school for anything that we might need and right now we really need books for our library,” said Nisperos. “So that is one of our main goals.”
They have organized a couple fundraisers during this 2013-14 school year and according to Sanchez, they have been very successful.
“We did really well for our school, I think that was great, and it was because of the help of all the students, teachers and parents,” said Sanchez. “We couldn’t have done it without all their support so we have a good support system here.”
The students were thrilled to see their principal in a taco costume and were all smiles when she made her rounds through the cafeteria.
Sacknitz was also in good spirits, noting she was very proud of the students and the P.T.C. for the efforts in the book fair.
“I love our principal because she is so down to earth and so willing to do whatever for the school and the kids,” added Sanchez.
The P.T.C. was created late in the school year so they were only able to have two fundraisers. However, the group feels that both were a success and are looking forward to doing more next year.
