Though Memorial Day is often referred to as the official ‘start of summer,’ there was a good-sized crowd that took time out from family barbecues or trips to the river to attend Riverbank’s Memorial Day Commemoration on Monday, May 29.

The event is traditionally held at the Veteran’s Wall in front of the Riverbank Community Center, and features speakers, musicians and other ceremonial components to help ‘Remember and Honor’ those who gave their lives in service to this country.

After welcoming remarks from Riverbank Mayor Richard D. O’Brien, there were two guest speakers that offered some thoughts on the day.

Stanislaus County District 1 Supervisor Buck Condit and California Fifth District Congressman Tom McClintock both stepped to the podium, touching on the dedication of service members and the sacrifices they and their families make.

The midday event also featured trumpeter Wayne Hill playing Taps and a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace.

As is tradition on Memorial Day, the colors were raised to full staff at noon, having started the day at half-staff in honor of those who gave their lives. The raising of the flag was carried out by local veterans Duke Cooper and Eddie Jones.

Also part of the ceremony was the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard presenting a Flag Folding Ceremony.
