An Oakdale man suffered fatal injuries in a Friday evening, Jan. 9 crash outside the city, near the intersection of Highway 120 and 26-Mile Road, when the bicycle he was riding collided with a pickup truck.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Wayne Townsend, 63, of Oakdale.

According to the California Highway Patrol, units were dispatched to the scene about 6:20 p.m.

Modesto CHP Public Information Officer Tom Olsen explained that the crash occurred on Highway 120, east of 26-Mile Road.

The truck driver, said the CHP, was driving his 2007 Ford pickup westbound on Highway 120, while Townsend was riding his bicycle eastbound, on the north shoulder, approaching the Ford. For an unknown reason, Townsend swerved the bike into the westbound lane, directly in front of the Ford. The front of the truck struck the bicyclist.

Emergency crews transported Townsend to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Ford was uninjured. The CHP report said the truck driver was determined to not be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. It is unknown at this time if the cyclist was under the influence.
