The first meeting of the new year for the Riverbank Heirloom Garden Club is on the schedule for Saturday, March 30 at 4 p.m., being hosted at 2618 Sierra St., Riverbank.

“Bring your questions and join us,” said club organizer Terry Harper. “Learn how to grow Heirlooms, learn how to save your seeds, how to plant your seeds and how to take care of your garden, no pesticides.”

Harper said the club is focused on sustainability, handing down Heirloom seeds from generation to generation. He said a recent check of prices in a seed company catalog prompted him to set up the first gathering this year for the local club.

“We need to grow all our own plants from the seeds we saved from the previous year,” Harper explained. “They are free, no cost at all. The garden club will meet about six times a year at one of our garden club members’ houses.”

There is no cost to join the club, no dues, by-laws or elected positions.

“We have a bunch of old timers with a knowledge of gardening,” Harper said.

Among the topics to be covered are natural pest control, how to grow a lot of vegetables in a small area, how and when to water, and more.
