Helping You Prepare For The Next Emergency
California

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is hosting the annual California Day of Preparedness event “Surviving the Wild West” that encourages Californians to take steps to prepare for emergencies or disasters in their homes, businesses, schools and communities. This free, family-friendly event is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, Nestlé Waters and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).

It is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old Sacramento State Historic Park.

The theme, “Surviving the Wild West,” refers to Old Sacramento being the commercial center of the California Gold Rush, as it became a crossroads of transportation, connected by steamboats to San Francisco, by supply roads to mining regions, and to Folsom by the first railroad in the West. Despite floods, fires, and epidemics, Sacramento became California’s capital in 1854. California is also considered one of the most diverse states when it comes to “wild” natural disasters – wildfires, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and even volcanoes.

This year’s record-breaking wildfires, extreme heat and the constant threat of a major earthquake in California reminds us of the importance of emergency preparedness. Although Californians are seemingly accustomed to natural disasters, it is critical to stay prepared and informed for the next disaster. This event provides Cal OES and its partners with an opportunity to provide the public with information that could help reduce their risk, as well as kick off National Preparedness Month.

California’s Day of Preparedness will kick off at 10 a.m. with the national anthem and opening remarks from: Cal OES Director Mark Ghilarducci, Nestlé Waters Executive Vice President & Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Tara Carraro, and PG&E Manager of Emergency Management Cecile Pinto.

Among the events and activities scheduled are: Learn how to create the perfect prep kit, K-9 demonstrations, “Wires Down” demonstration by PG&E, Helicopter Fire Attack, Jaws of Life demonstration and many other first responders and special equipment.
