Home Buyers Program Flourishing

Riverbank's home buyers' loan program is doing well even if the numbers seem small, according to Rosa Casas at city hall.

The city offers loans to low income families to assist first time home buyers with the purchase of a house located in the city.

"We have a number of people interested, funds are available and there is no waiting list. In January we funded five loans to purchase and five is good," she said.

The funds are available from grants the city obtained from the California Housing and Community Development Department under the HOME program and CDBG (Community Development Block Grant).

The loan is a 30 year, 3 percent simple interest, deferred payment loan and intended to fill the gap between what the buyer can obtain from a bank or private lender and what the city will loan. Low income is defined as 80 percent or below of the county's annual median income and currently ranges from $34,750 for one person to $65,500 for an eight person family.
