The local American Association of University Women, Oakdale, Riverbank, Escalon (AAUW ORE) Branch is currently planning its major scholarship fundraising event to be held on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Gene Bianchi Community Center, 110 S. Second Ave., Oakdale. The cost for this event is $25 per person. Tickets are available from current members, at the door, or by calling 209-847-8553. The price of the ticket includes appetizers, beverages, both a silent and oral auction and viewing of a film related to travel on the Spanish, Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail.

With the proceeds from this annual fundraising event the AAUW ORE Branch has been able to provide young eighth grade women an opportunity to attend the Tech Trek Math and Science Camp for Girls. This one week camp experience, held on a college campus, strives to develop personal self-confidence, as well as interest and excitement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields by participating in hands-on activities in math, science and related fields. In addition, AAUW ORE is also able to award one $4000 college scholarship and one $1000 Junior College/Technical Scholarship each year to high school senior girls from Oakdale, Riverbank and Escalon who attended California AAUW’s Summer Trek Tech Math and Science Camp. The current recipients were awarded the 2016 scholarships at the regular May membership meeting. Carolina Duarte, a graduate of Riverbank High School, received the four-year college scholarship and is attending CSU Fresno. Zoe Brown, an Escalon High School graduate, was the two-year junior college scholarship recipient and is currently enrolled at Delta College in Stockton.

In addition to this important fundraising activity, the AAUW ORE Branch holds monthly program based meetings and sponsors an array of sub-group gatherings, for example, focused on book review, gourmet dining, and on-the-go travel.

Current and prospective members in the Oakdale, Riverbank, or Escalon area, which include graduates holding an associates or higher degree from an institution of the AAUW list of qualified institutions and persons holding an honorary degree are invited to join this active and committed group. Prospective members who would like more information about the local branch and its activities, or those interested in the October fundraiser, should call Membership Chair, Anne Hendricks at 838-2495.
