There were approximately 75 folks in attendance with members of the local community and members from neighboring Cub Scout Packs, Pack 10 in Riverbank and Pack 303 in Oakdale in attendance for Astronaut Jose Hernandez’ visit on Monday, July 12.

Dr. Hernandez spent 14 days in space on the Space Shuttle Discovery and on the International Space Station in 2009.

He shared with the Scouts the obstacles he faced, his dad’s five principles for achieving goals and perservering, being rejected 11 times by NASA for the Astronaut Corps and making it on the twelfth try.

He is proud of his family and said both of his sons got their Eagle Scout award and finally reminded all in attendance how important it is to get a good education and have fun along the way.

Pack 263 is open to all boys and girls from Kindergarten to 5th grade and meets the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at the First Baptist Church in Escalon.
