The Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) is hosting a Technology Night for Parents: Digital Citizenship on Tuesday, Aug. 23. The event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at SCOE’s Petersen Event Center at 720 12th St., Modesto. The free hour-long session, offered concurrently in both English and Spanish, is the first in a series of technology sessions geared toward parents. Walk-ins are welcome but registration is encouraged online at www.stancoe.org.

The session offers parents resources to help keep track of common Internet slang, popular apps, and how technology can be used for more than just video games.

Students, ages 13 to 18, use an average of nine hours of media daily, not including school work. The question is: who is teaching children how to interact online? Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. SCOE’s Technology Learning Resource Director Sally Savona said Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students and technology users for a society full of technology.
