The Riverbank High School Winterguard team achieved First Place for the 2022 Central Valley Guard and Percussion Circuit Scholastic Regional A Championship. The final competition of the season was held at Enochs High School on April 2 for the high school and junior high.

The outstanding showmanship from Marina Avila, Analysa Avery, Rilee Bruner, Ruby Cerda, Jessica Garcia-Rivas, and Brianna Guel kept the team in the top three throughout the competitive season. This past weekend the RHS Winterguard sealed the first place standing, defeating 10 other schools in the final competition for the 2022 season.

“These ladies have worked very hard all season and proved with hard work and determination, they could bring home that Championship win,” stated Band Director Joey Aguilar. “To put more icing on the victory cake, Cardozo Middle School Winterguard are the 2022 Scholastic Junior High A Class Champions. This was a great Riverbank Unified School District victory this weekend.”

Cardozo Middle competed against four other junior high schools in the Central Valley Guard and Percussion Circuit during February and March. For the final competition there were about 30 schools represented.

Cardozo Band Director David Howard noted that they lost a guard member three weeks before the end of the season.

“Because of that loss, we did not have enough members to compete,” said Howard. “So we told the group I guess this is the end of our season. Two hours later, we came up with a solution to continue competing. We added two boys to our show that had very little work to do in the show but gave us enough members to continue to compete. Those last two shows we took first place and ended up champions for the year.”

There were 11 high school groups including RHS that are in the Scholastic Regional A Class. There was a team of choreographers including Jorge Tovar, Crystal Dickerson, and Teresa Hernandez that assisted in making the 2022 season successful.

“This was the best group we have had since I have been here,” expressed Aguilar. “They really pushed themselves as a whole and really bought into the process of building a Winterguard show.”

The RHS Winterguard will be taking the week off and then will start creating a new performance for the Night of the Fine Arts Concert on May 19.

Aguilar noted that they will be having Colorguard auditions for new members the week of May 2 through 6 for any incoming freshmen and next year’s 10th through 12th graders with hopes to grow the team to at least 16 members for next year.
