Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 0.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.81/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.36/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Modesto during the past week, prices Sunday were 29.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 5.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 6.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 14.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

“Gas prices are up in many places and motorists should be gearing up for more in the coming weeks, thanks to Hurricane Harvey inundating significant refineries along the Texas coastline, leading to closures and tilting the delicate balance of supply and demand,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on Aug. 27 in Modesto have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.51/gallon in 2016, $3.01 in 2015, $3.74 in 2014, $3.62 in 2013 and $4.07/gallon in 2012.

Areas near Modesto and their current gas price climate include: Stockton - $2.85/gallon, up 2.6 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.83; Oakland - $3.03, up 2.0 cents per gallon from $3.01; and San Jose - $3.03, up 3.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $3.00/gallon.

“Prices will likely rise nearly country wide heading into Labor Day, from rural towns in the Rockies to major cities in the Midwest and West Coast – nearly everyone will feel a bit of a pinch at the pump from Harvey. The impact could linger for several weeks or longer, depending on how long it takes Texas refiners to return to normal operations,” said DeHaan.
