North San Joaquin Almond Day Slated

Local growers and agricultural leaders are encouraged to attend the upcoming 2016 North San Joaquin Valley Almond Day, set for Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Modesto Centre Plaza.

The event is slated from 8:30 a.m. to noon and will include a variety of topics and guest speakers.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. at the Plaza, 1150 9th St., Modesto.

At 8:30 a.m., University of California Cooperative Extension Pomology/Viticulture Advisor Roger Duncan will provide the welcome and introduction. He serves as a farm advisor for Stanislaus County as well.

Updates on Local Almond Production and Pest Management Field Trials will follow, with presenters and specific topics including:

David Doll, UC Cooperative Extension, Merced County: Fumigation trials within replanted orchards in the presence of nematodes;

Dr. Brent Holtz, UC Cooperative Extension, San Joaquin County: NOW and Scab efficacy trials, re-incorporation of woody material during orchard removal; and

Roger Duncan, UC Cooperative Extension, Stanislaus County: Topping young trees, using compost, rootstock evaluation, fumigating for Verticillium wilt.

Understanding Almond Tree Growth to Maximize Production with Dr. Ted DeJong, Professor, UC Davis Plant Sciences.

Yield Response to Water in Almonds by Dr. Ken Shackel, Professor, UC Davis Plant Sciences.

Diagnosis and Management of Wood Canker Diseases with Dr. Florent Trouillas, Plant Pathology Extension Specialist, UC Kearney Ag Center.

Understanding and Managing Leaf Footed Bug with Dr. Andrea Joyce, UC Merced.

Highlights of Recent Field Projects at the Nickels Estate, including self-fertile almonds, pollinizer combinations with Nonpareil, growing organically vs. conventionally, planting on berms vs. no berms and minimal pruning with Dr. Franz Niederholzer, UCCE; Sutter, Yuba and Colusa counties.
