Big Valley Grace Community Church will become Pirate Island for Kids Campus, July 10 through 14 in a fun Vacation Bible School program. ‘Pirates’ kicks off on Sunday, July 10 at 6 p.m.; bring the family and enjoy a time of fellowship, fun and free pizza. Kids in first through sixth grades return on Monday at 10 a.m. to explore the uncharted seas and discover God’s amazing grace. Hours for the Monday through Thursday VBS are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at the Worship Center of Big Valley Grace Community Church, 4040 Tully Road, Modesto, a half-mile north of Standiford Avenue. Riverbank welcomes the REO Speechtrain Toastmasters Club for regular meetings every Wednesday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., at Perko’s Cafe, Patterson and Oakdale roads, Riverbank. This is a fun way to learn the self-confidence and skills needed for public speaking. All are invited to come and check out the group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 13. The Oakdale Community United Methodist Church, 1480 Poplar Ave., Oakdale, will host a pancake breakfast and classic car show on Saturday, July 16 at the church from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no cost to show your car and all are welcome to attend. The Oakdale Lion’s Club is hosting its ninth annual Poker Tournament on Saturday, July 16. The event will be hosted at the Oakdale Rodeo Grounds and is open to all interested in playing cards for a cause. Registration is at 9 a.m., play starts at 10 a.m. with a noon break for lunch. Cost is a $75 donation for tournament and lunch and there will be drawings for door and raffle prizes. There is also a 50/50 Black Jack Tournament with a $10 buy in and the tournament itself includes $2,500 pay out in Visa cards. For tickets, contact any Oakdale Lion’s Club member or call Steve at 209-247-2407. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Stanislaus County Office of Education’s YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) Company is producing the classic musical “Les Miserables, School Edition” to be performed at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto. Tickets are now on sale at the Gallo Center for the Arts box office and online at www.galloarts.org. Performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 28; Fridays, July 22 and 29; with 3 p.m. shows on Saturdays, July 23 and 30; Sundays, July 24 and 31. Oakdale’s VFW Post is gearing up for the next of its monthly hamburger night fundraisers, with Wednesday, Aug. 3 the date for the next event. Hours are from 5:30 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m., at the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo Grounds clubhouse. Attendees can stay after eating to socialize. All donations at the dessert table at the monthly dinner go to purchase wreaths for Wreaths Across America. The local VFW and Auxiliary’s goal is to have a wreath on every grave at the Santa Nella Veterans cemetery.
