Out and About is your guide to upcoming events in and around the Riverbank area.

 

Golden Agers weekly dances are open to those 50 and older from throughout the Central Valley at the Riverbank Community Center. Doors open Wednesdays at 9 a.m.; the center is at 3600 Santa Fe St., and first time guests are admitted free. The annual membership fee is $12 and each Wednesday members pay $5 and non-members can enjoy a few hours of music and dancing for $6.

A five-session Bible “walk-through” covering both the entire old and new Testaments, from Genesis through Revelation, will be offered at Escalon First Baptist Church from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on the five Sundays of October, beginning Oct. 1. Escalon First Baptist Church is at 1511 Catherine Way. This informative, fun, interactive style Bible study will allow each participant to have a clear understanding of the flow of the entire Bible, how it is arranged, what happens where, its central message, and how to read, study, and understand the scriptures for the rest of one’s life – all in five short sessions. The local REO Speechtrain Toastmasters Club gathers for regular meetings every Wednesday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., at Perko’s Cafe, Patterson and Oakdale roads, Riverbank. This is a fun way to learn the self-confidence and skills needed for public speaking. All are invited to come and check out the group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 4. Modesto Junior College’s weekly Science Colloquium continues on Wednesdays at 3:15 p.m. in the Science Community Center, Room 115, on West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave., Modesto. The Colloquium series offers one hour discussions on timely science-related topics, and is free and open to the public. There is a $2 charge for on campus parking without a permit. October events will include: Oct. 4 – “Genetics Information Explosion and You” by Karin Wagner, MS, LCGC, genetic counselor, Kaiser Permanente; Oct. 11 – “Keeping Local Water Safe” by Ryan Sellman, P.E., Sr. engineer, Carollo Engineers, Inc.; Oct. 18 – “Physics for All” by Don Williams, C.S.U. Fresno Physics Outreach; and Oct. 25 – “How Original California People Used Native Plants Everyday” by Lillian Vallee, Ph.D., MJC professor emeritus of English. ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking individuals to serve as Area Representatives in the local community. ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world.
