The Modesto Junior College Civic Engagement Project (CEP) invites the community to Free Speech and Hate Speech: A Panel Discussion with Experts on Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in Forum 110 on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto. The free event is part of the CEP Spring Film and Lecture Series. Campus parking is available for $2 in student parking lots.

This event features presentations on free speech and hate speech by constitutional scholar Dr. Stephen Routh from the Political Science Department at California State University, Stanislaus and by MJC history professors Curtis Martin and Al Smith.

The panelists are focusing on the legal status of speech, historical context of speech, moral issues surrounding hate speech, how different nation-states handle speech issues, and how targeted groups can best respond to protected speech that they experience as hateful.

Attendance at CEP events is limited, so arriving a little early is encouraged.

For more information on MJC’s CEP or the Film and Lecture Series contact Jason Wohlstadter, Ph.D., MJC professor of English, at wohlstadterj@mjc.edu.
