The officers of Riverbank Police Services are making plans for the annual “Shop With a Cop” program for this holiday season.

In its eighth year, the annual effort is designed to assist underprivileged children in the area during the holidays, according to Community Services Officer Melissa Hardy.

“Through generous donations from the community and participating local businesses, selected children will be picked up by a deputy in a patrol car and escorted to a select store in the city of Riverbank,” she said. “The deputy will shop with the child, who will receive a warm jacket and much needed essential clothing.”

Once the clothes shopping is over, there is more fun in store.

“At the conclusion of the shopping spree, the children will all be escorted to the Riverbank Community Center, where they will join their parents and enjoy a pizza dinner,” Hardy said. “Santa will be there, taking pictures with the children and passing out gifts.”

This year’s event is scheduled to take place on Dec. 20.

Hardy asked that individuals or businesses that would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help sponsor a child can bring it to the Police Services office, on Santa Fe Street, next to City Hall North.

She said a check could also be mailed to Police Services at 6727 Third St., Riverbank, CA 95367. She asked that checks be made payable to “City of Riverbank.”

Hardy said a donation receipt and/or a Tax ID number are available upon request.
