Already on the schedule for early May of 2015, planning has started for Riverbank’s next Relay For Life event to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“We have eight teams already signed up to participate in May 2 and 3 Relay For Life of Riverbank,” said chairperson Lisa Alba. “Some people may not know what Relay is or they think they cannot put together a team. Marissa Casillas who was on “Team Forever Arleen” last year and who donated nine inches of her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, wants to be more involved so she is having her own Relay for Life Team for 2015 ‘The WALKamole Crew’ is what her team is called.”

Just 8 years old, Marissa is one of many community residents that will be taking up the fight, said Alba.

“You can be a part of this wonderful event,” she added.

Relay For Life is a family-oriented event, where participants can walk or run on a track relay style for 24 hours, with at least one person from each team on the track at all times. Participants camp around the track, and when they are not taking their turn walking, they can participate in other fun activities. Former and current cancer patients, their families, and the public are invited to take part in this exciting team relay event. Teams typically consist of individuals representing corporations, clubs, organizations, families, friends, caregivers and survivors.

“It is a group of people ‘Fighting Back’ against cancer, as we hope to raise money so one day we can find a cure,” Alba said.

Young Marissa has already put on a yard sale fundraiser to help get her team started on their way. For information on helping her team or becoming a part of it, contact her at mrelay4life@yahoo.com.

“This little girl is a go getter and is making it her commitment to join the fight against cancer,” Alba noted. “If you have ever wondered how you can make a difference, then please join us in our efforts to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. I encourage all Riverbank businesses and residents to have a Relay For Life of Riverbank Team.”

Alba also is asking local residents to save the date and plan to attend the Relay For Life of Riverbank Kick-Off on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2827 Topeka St., Riverbank. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. and you can sign up at lisaalbarelayforlife@hotmail.com or call Alba at 209-300-1333.
