Authorities said the victim in a fatal car crash in Escalon on July 29 was identified as a Riverbank teen.

Luis Javier Martinez, 14, of Riverbank was killed when the car he was riding in collided nearly head on with a tow truck. Officials said he was ejected from the car and suffered fatal injuries. His identity was released through the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office.

The car, driven by a 22-year-old Riverbank man, was eastbound on Mariposa Road and reportedly driving at a high rate of speed passing other vehicles when it struck a westbound tow truck. The force of the crash ejected the teen and caused major damage to the car, pinning the driver, who had to be extricated by rescue crews. He was taken to a hospital with major injuries and was identified by the CHP as 22-year-old Salvador Canas. A second passenger, identified as Jorge Rios, had minor injuries, as did the driver of the tow truck, a 43-year-old man from Stockton.

The crash occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29 on Mariposa near Brennan Road.
