Parents of fifth graders from California Avenue and Mesa Verde elementary schools in Riverbank were able to participate in a Parenting Partner class in May that was held in Spanish. They completed a series of five workshops involving topics like listening to your child, discipline, and applying consequences presented by the Parenting Center. The course was designed to help parents that have children advancing to Cardozo Middle School make a successful transition.

The two-week class was hosted Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 8 to May 22, running from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The class was taught by Parent Liaison, Karen De La Torre Vargas and facilitator Lupe Duarte. Parents Zozima Salvador, Edilia Ruiz, Yesenia Amezquita, Maria Albor and Maria Chavez graduated from the Parenting Partners class and received certificates for completion.

“The purpose of the course was to discuss key parenting skills that will help our children be more successful at school and at home,” stated De La Torre Vargas. “Also, new things we are incorporating in our calendar will be: Aeries parent portal help, early literacy workshops, homework help workshops, math for middle school workshops, gang awareness workshops, and family events like pumpkin decorating, ornament decorating, healthy living and many more.”

The Parenting Networking Center will be closed from June 18 to July 13 and will reopen on July 16 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The next class will start on Aug. 28 in Spanish and on Sept. 13 in English beginning at 9 a.m. Interested parents can sign up for the class by calling 209-863-0837.
