St. Frances of Rome Church, 2827 Topeka St., Riverbank will be running a fireworks booth from June 27 to July 4 in the parking lot, to raise funds for World Youth Day (WYD) 2013.

The World Youth Day is a worldwide event for young adults and teenagers that Pope John Paul II started in 1989. The event occurs every three years in a different country. The last celebration was held in Madrid and this year it will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July.

According to local WYD trip coordinator, Juana Aguilar, this would be the first time members of St. Frances of Rome church would be attending. The event gives the youth an opportunity to experience the universality of the Church and deepen faith, she said.

Aguilar participated in the WYD event in Madrid and found that it would be very beneficial to the youth from the church.

“I gathered some hardworking people and started planning,” said Aguilar.

On June 28 through June 30 the booth will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and all the other days they will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
