Luminaria Drive Thru Saturday
rfl

To close out what has been an unusual year for the local American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Oakdale-Riverbank-Escalon-Waterford, organizers will host a drive-thru luminaria ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The event is scheduled at the United Methodist Church in Oakdale, 1480 Poplar, and will begin at 7 p.m.

Luminaria bags are purchased in memory of a loved one lost to cancer or in honor of someone still fighting or someone who has beaten the disease. The drive-thru will be set up in the church parking lot, with vehicles entering one way and driving around the horseshoe shaped parking lot to exit out the other side, viewing the lighted luminaria bags along the way.

Proceeds from the purchase of the bags benefit the local Relay and the drive thru is the final event for the 2020 calendar year. The on-site Relay had to be canceled this year due to COVID; teams continued to fundraise in different ways to help finance the ACS mission, including a tri-tip drive thru fundraiser at House of Beef in Oakdale.

For the season, the local Relay had reached nearly $21,000 raised prior to completion of the tri-tip and luminaria fundraisers being counted in.

Next year, officials hope to offer a large celebratory in person event, to mark the 20th year of Relay For Life in the Oakdale area.
