The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Jan. 16 through Monday, Jan. 22. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JAN. 22
Companies rotated through Station 17 for chest X-rays as part of their annual physicals.
Chief Wise presented newly promoted engineer Stephen Lunny with his engineer’s badge at Station 17 during academy training.
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 companies trained on stokes basket rigging, ropes, and knots.
Battalion 5: 5:59 a.m. – Engine 26, Engine 7, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 were dispatched to the 6200 block of Jaguar Court in the City of Riverbank for a smell of burning electrical. Minutes later, another potential response was dispatched for similar circumstances at the end of the block. Battalion 5 established level 2 staging for the additional resources at Galaxy Theater. Crews checked each residence, and most had a smell of burning electrical in their house. In total, 16 homes were affected with two having small fires in the electrical boxes. The power was secured and PG& E was requested.
Crews completed weekly apparatus and equipment checks.
Companies completed station maintenance.
Companies trained on 10-month test preparation and review of EMS calls involving mentally ill patients.
9:35 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 27, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 responded back to Jaguar Court, Riverbank, for a potential structure fire, smell of smoke in the residence. As PG&E re-energized the homes from a prior incident in the area, residents started smelling smoke in their homes and some appliances and HVAC systems were not working. Crews re-checked the homes on the Court and confirmed there was no signs of fire or arcing electrical. Firefighters assisted PG&E with notifying residents that these items may have been damaged in the first incident and to contact PG&E for assistance.
1:06 a.m. – (Jan. 23) Engine 27, Engine 28, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 to Birdwell Street for a potential structure fire response for a natural gas leak inside an apartment. Crews arrived on scene and found a strong smell of natural gas in the apartment. Firefighters were able to locate a malfunctioning stove and secured it. The balance of the assignment was cancelled. Crews remained on scene ventilating the structure and waiting for PG&E to arrive.
SUNDAY, JAN. 21
Battalion 2: Engine 21, E22/Q22, E9, E24 and E26 met in the 100 blk of E Street for rope rescue training. Crews rescued a dummy that was at the bottom of a slope.
Battalion 5: Companies conducted company level training.
Companies performed apparatus and station maintenance.
Engines 21, 22, 23, 24, 9, BC2 and BC5 participated in a rope rescue drill in Waterford.
SATURDAY, JAN. 20
Battalion 2: 8:03 a.m. – Engine 21 responded to a fence fire in the Benson Road and Canal Avenue area. Witnesses described the individual who started the fire, who was seen leaving as E21 arrived. Stanislaus Sherriff and FIU arrived in the area and could not locate the individual. The fire damaged a small portion of the fence; the case is under investigation.
Battalion 5: 2:59 a.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at 26 Mile Road and Valley Home Road in Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived with one vehicle off the roadway and the solo occupant out of the vehicle. Engine 28 assisted Oak Valley Ambulance with patient packaging and the responding balance with cancelled.
Crews completed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Station 29’s crew conducted boat operator training with the increased flows on the Stanislaus River.
FRIDAY, JAN. 19
Modesto Fire Department members held a celebration of life for retired Battalion Chief Cecil Ridge. Chief Ridge served the City of Modesto for over 30 years and was honored for his service.
THURSDAY, JAN. 18
Battalion 2: Monthly Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District board meeting was held at Station 26 in Riverbank.
E23/WT23, E24 met in Waterford and trained on water tender ops as well as driveway lays.
3:46 p.m. – Engine 21 responded to Hillside Drive and Tioga Avenue for a fire, subjects had been lighting branches on fire with gasoline. Witness reported a subject running away concealing the gas can. FIU was notified of the incident.
Battalion 5: BC5 trained with BC2 on roles/responsibilities of Battalion 5.
Engine 27 and BC 5 walked through the newest wing of Belmare Senior Living in the City of Oakdale. The new wing is independent living and is expected to have residents in the beginning of February.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 17
Battalion 2: 7:42 a.m. – Engine 26 responded for a vehicle vs. pedestrian on Highway 108 near First Street. They arrived to find one patient with major injuries. E26 provided BLS care and assisted the ambulance with transport to a local hospital. Riverbank Police Services are investigating.
7:52 a.m. – Engines 23, Engine 24, and CalFire Engine 4456 responded to a vehicle accident on Highway 132 east of LaGrange. E4456 arrived and reported a solo vehicle with one patient involved. The crews provided BLS care and traffic control until the ambulance arrived. The patient was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
Battalion 5: Crews rotated through chest X-rays and blood draws.
Engine 7 and BC5 had a vendor demo of an electronic flow meter for future flow testing of engines.
TUESDAY, JAN. 16
Crews rotated through Station 17 for annual X-rays.
Chief Wise and the MST Deputy Chiefs conducted their monthly department update to all the crews over Teams platform.
Newly promoted Battalion Chief Chris Costa started his new assignment and had his badge pinned by Chief Wise.
Battalion 2: Battalion Chief Scott Burke continued his 40-hour orientation training by riding out with BC2, topics covered were daily duties and BC expectations.
Engine 26 trained on rope systems.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Companies performed station maintenance.
Engine 27 trained on ground schools in preparation for firefighter McHenry’s upcoming 10-month testing.
The fuel mitigation team completed a mulching project behind Fire Station 30.
