The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, March 17 through Monday, March 23. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MARCH 23
Battalion 2: Water Rescue 24 and 26 took advantage of high flows on the river and trained on swift water rescue techniques and worked on boat operator sign offs on the Tuolumne River.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Crews completed mandated Target Solution assignments and conducted Monday apparatus checks and weekly yard maintenance
SUNDAY, MARCH 22
MST BCs met at the RFTC to go over monthly battalion training.
Battalion 2: 4:23 p.m. – Engine 26, E27, Q22, and BC 5 responded to the 3700 block of Stanislaus Street in Riverbank for a report of a ceiling fan smoking inside a bedroom. E26 arrived and found a defective ceiling fan; E27 assisted with checking the attic for smoldering debris.
7:05 p.m. – E26 and BC5 responded to the area of Highway 108 and Mesa Drive in Riverbank, to assist Oak Valley ambulance with packaging a patient that was down an embankment near the Stanislaus River.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 companies completed daily apparatus and equipment maintenance as well as completed mandated on-line training.
12:20 p.m. – Engines 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, Quint 22, 18, Battalions 2, and 5 responded to a working commercial structure fire at Haiden Ford in the city of Oakdale. E28 was the first to arrive and advised that there was light smoke from the front door and attic area. Once engines were in place and two-out was established, crews made entry and found a small fire in the parts area. The fire was quickly contained to the area of origin. FIU is investigating the cause of the fire.
SATURDAY, MARCH 21
Battalion 2: PPE for the five new academy recruits is being prepared as the academy is past the halfway mark.
Battalion 5: Crews completed company level training and daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Companies participated in company level drill day. Engines 27 and 28 performed hose stretches and trained on lifting objects with air bags.
3:24 p.m. – Engine 29 was dispatched to a location east of the covered bridge in Knights Ferry for a person with an ankle injury. Engine 29 located their patient over a mile away from the bridge, unable to walk. Engine 28 and Battalion 5 were requested. Engine 29 firefighter/medic provided ALS care. Once all resources had arrived, the patient was placed in a stokes basket and carried to Battalion 5’s vehicle which, along with the firefighter/medic, taken to the waiting ambulance. The patient was transported to a local hospital.
FRIDAY, MARCH 20
Battalion 2: Engine 26 attended a funeral for a fallen Cal Fire firefighter in Turlock.
Battalion 5: 5:45 p.m. – Engine 28, E29, E27 and BC5 responded to reports of an injury accident on Sonora Road and 26 Mile Road. Crews located a solo vehicle overturned with the driver self-extricated. Cal Fire R4433 had stopped at the scene prior to our arrival to assist. E29 paramedic assessed the patient and found minor injuries. CHP is investigating.
7:04 p.m. – E28, E27, E26 and BC5 responded to reports of a vehicle accident in the 12300 block of 26 Mile Road. Crews arrived with Oak Valley Ambulance for a single vehicle into a fence with minor injuries.
2:08 am. (Saturday) – E27 and BC5 responded to reports of an unknown type fire near 26 Mile Road and Sonora Road. Crews located an agricultural burn.
THURSDAY, MARCH 19
Battalion 2: Crews completed exterior station maintenance across the battalion.
Crews completed target solutions assignments.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 28, Engine 29 and Battalion 5 attended the MST water rescue work group meeting. Topics covered included training, response and PPE.
Engine 28 gave a fire prevention presentation to residents at Oak Haven Senoir Apartments.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18
Battalion 5: 7:16 a.m. – Engine 27 and Battalion 5 to West F Street for an EMSCPR call. Firefighters arrived on scene with OVHD Medics to find the patient in cardiac arrest. Crews started pit crew CPR, ALS procedures and placed the Lucas Device on the patient. After 20 minutes with no change in the patient’s condition, the patient was declared deceased by a doctor at Memorial Medical Center. OPD assisted on scene.
Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 29 completed weekly apparatus checks and station maintenance at Station 30 in Valley Home.
TUESDAY, MARCH 17
Battalion 2: E24’s crew and Fire Inspector Sansing attended the College and Career Fair in Waterford at Waterford Middle School.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Crews completed mandated Target Solution assignments and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 3, Engine 27, Q22, Battalion 5, along with CHP, MPD, AMR, Cal Star Reach, Memorial Medical Center and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department participated in the Every 15 Minutes Program at Johansen High School. The grant funded program brings awareness to high school juniors and seniors the consequences of driving impaired.
Engine 27 conducted a walk-through of Belmare Senior Living and trained on hose stretches and estimations.
Engine 28 conducted a simulated structure fire for one of their crew members who is taking the upcoming Engineer promotional exam. The scenario covered a multiple attack line fire, hydraulics, and rural water supply considerations.
