James Carwell

April 28, 1918 – December 26, 2014

James Carwell passed away Friday, December 26th after 96 magnificent years.  He was born in San Bernardino County on April 28, 1918, and moved throughout California until finally settling and retiring in Riverbank, where he lived for the final twenty five years of his life.   He worked from the age of thirteen to the age of sixty eight, doing such jobs as chauffeur, grape picker, butcher, State Meat Inspector and finally ending his career as a Federal Meat Inspector.

James married the love of his life, Jennie Perona, on February 21, 1937, and together they shared nearly 78 blissful years of matrimony.  He once said that the secret to their long and happy marriage was that they said the Lord’s Prayer together every night before they went to bed.  His hobbies included playing with his grandchildren, fishing, gardening, antique refinishing, jewelry making and, most notably, lamp making.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Elsie and granddaughter Terry.  He is survived by his wife Jennie, daughter Shirley, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, January 2nd, at the Community United Methodist Church located at 1480 Poplar St. Oakdale, CA 95361.
