Naval Petty Officer Third Class James Ray Layton, 22, died Tuesday, Sept. 8 in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Born Jan. 29, 1987 in Livermore, he was a resident of Riverbank.

An artist, healer and music lover, he brought joy and love into the lives of his family, friends and Comrades in Arms. His desire to make a difference in life lead him to the Navy Medical Corps, where he died administering medical care to another fallen comrade in the service of his country.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Nikki Freitas and Gilbert Freitas; father Brent Layton; brothers Jonathon, Jesse, Brandon and Sage; sister Jordan; grandmothers Kathy Anderson and Shirley Hughes; grandfather Winn Layton; stepsister Andrea Freitas; stepbrother Jason Freitas; and loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his Papa, Ray Hughes.

Graveside military services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 East River Road, Escalon. Reception to follow at the Community Center in Escalon.
