Lucy passed away peacefully in her home in Riverbank with family by her side on Thanksgiving evening at the age of 98. She was born in the Mexican state of Chihuahua to her parents, Ernest and Maria Angeles. She moved with them and sister, Ruth Angeles, to Texas then Kansas before settling in Riverbank in 1925 and remained a lifelong resident.
Lucy was the first girl of Mexican decent to graduate from Oakdale High School in 1938. Lucy worked at many Riverbank businesses including Ron’s Pharmacy and Riverbank Pharmacy. She worked as a bilingual education aide at Riverbank High School. After retiring from Riverbank High School, she worked as an aide at California Ave School. She had a great positive influence on the numerous students she guided during her career.
Lucy also had a long record of community service including, The Girl and Boy Scouts of America, The Salvation Army, Riverbank Christian Food Sharing, the Riverbank Historical Society. Lucy was also a member of the Riverbank Chapter of Royal Neighbors of America, Sociedad Morelos and Sociedad Edad de Oro.
As a parishioner of the St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Lucy taught Catechism to the church youth for many years. In 2000, Lucy was named Riverbank Co-Citizen of the Year with her daughter, Yolanda, and in 2006, was named a Stanislaus County Living Pioneer Woman by the Stanislaus County Commission for Women.
Lucy was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother, and daughter in-law, Janice Alcala. She is survived by her sons, Rolando Alcala of Modesto, Michael Alcala of Charlotte, NC, and Salvador (Becky) Alcala of Davis, CA, and by her daughter, Yolanda Guider, also of Riverbank. Lucy also leaves her family of nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Riverbank, 2827 Topeka St., on Wednesday, December 13th, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a Rosary Vigil at 6 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, December 14th at St. Frances of Rome at 10 a.m. followed by burial at the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery, 701 East J St, in Oakdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations be made to the Riverbank Christian Food Sharing, the Riverbank Historical Society, or the Community Hospice Foundation of Modesto.
