Shirley Algeo, 79, died Saturday, Dec. 15 surrounded by family at Oak Valley Hospital.
She was born the daughter of Ralph and Merle Pendleton in Williston, N.D. and raised in John Day, Oregon with her five sisters and brother. The daughter of a saw mill owner, she spent her childhood collecting eggs on the family ranch.
As a testament to her strong work ethic, she was known for her many jobs in the community. She served local residents at Brawley's Coffee Shop and The Nutcracker. She also drove bus for Oakdale Unified School District and, in 1991, she retired as the cafeteria manager for Riverbank High School.
Upon her retirement, she took the opportunity to strengthen her relationship with her family. Already a loving mother of four, she played a significant role in the lives of her seven grandchildren. If asked about her greatest accomplishment, she would no doubt have spent hours lauding the accomplishments of her six great grandchildren while not-so-subtly hinting at her overwhelming desire for more of them from those grandchildren who had yet to do their part in growing the family.
Never one to remain idle, she continued to work part time for many years beyond her retirement. She held positions at local businesses Moss Rose Bakery, Unique Cottage, and Oakdale Locksmith.
Her family thanks Dr. Chet Mahida for his loving efforts to ensure her comfort in her final hours.
She is survived by her daughters, Dena Buchanan of Arroyo Grande, Cyndi (Greg) Rivera, and Theresa Gergits, all of Oakdale.
She was preceded in death by her son, Doug Campbell.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22 at the Oakdale Nazarene Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society Oakdale Relay For Life.
