A mid-afternoon collision in Riverbank on Sunday, Nov. 23 resulted in fatal injuries to a motorcyclist involved in the crash.

The victim was identified as Gary Stevenson, 72, of Modesto. His identity was released by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Riverbank Police Services was dispatched to the collision at Patterson Road and Snedigar Road shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sunday, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Michael Carranza.

“It was a Ford F-150 vs. a Harley-Davidson,” Carranza explained. “The motorcyclist was southbound on Snedigar; he had stopped at the stop sign.”

But, for an unknown reason, after initially stopping, the motorcycle then attempted to cross Patterson Road and drove into the path of a westbound pickup truck on Patterson, the motorcycle and truck colliding.

The driver of the pickup stopped and was cooperative with the investigation, officials said.

“It doesn’t appear to be any drugs or alcohol involved,” Carranza said.

But, he noted, the investigation is continuing as to why the motorcyclist proceeded into the roadway. Snedigar has stop signs at the intersection with Patterson but Patterson Road does not have a stop sign there.

The roadway in that area was also closed for several hours on Sunday, until about 7 p.m., while the preliminary investigation was conducted.

Stanislaus County MAIT, Major Accident Investigation Team, was dispatched to conduct a thorough investigation of the collision.

“It is still under investigation,” Carranza added, though officials said they do not expect any charges to be filed against the driver of the pickup.
