Physician’s International Experience In Focus At AAUW
aauw

Dr. Lauren Brown-Berchtold grew up in Escalon. While attending Westmont College in Santa Barbara, she traveled to Indonesia where she saw firsthand the inequalities that exist in health care. This experience was the catalyst to her decision to become a physician.

During her medical training, she became passionate about women’s health and the care of pregnant women. She visited Indonesia several times, and spent a month performing cesarean deliveries in Uganda at the hospital with the highest number of deliveries in the world. Dr. Brown-Berchtold, who is described as “not your traditional white coat doctor”, will talk to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Oakdale-Riverbank-Escalon Branch members and their guests on Thursday, Feb. 21 about the health care experiences, differences, and lessons she learned from around the globe, particularly Indonesia and Uganda.

After graduating from Keck School of Medicine of USC, Dr. Brown-Berchtold completed her residency training at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. She recently joined San Joaquin General Hospital as core faculty for the Family Medicine Residency. In addition to teaching new doctors, she loves caring for and delivering pregnant women, taking care of patients in the hospital, and doing medical procedures. She is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Outside of the hospital, she loves indoor skydiving, traveling around the world, reading fantasy and science fiction, and running around with her dogs, cats, and husband.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Since 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day – educational, social, economic and political. Graduates holding an associates or higher degree from an institution of the AAUW list of qualified institutions and persons holding an honorary degree are eligible for membership in AAUW.
