The construction of Adelante High is finally under way ... or at least the site is in preparation.

Chain link fence has gone up adjacent to Seventh Street between the Riverbank Unified School District office and the tennis courts and earthmovers have been chewing up the turf on the edge of the Cardozo Middle School playing fields.

Site preparation will take a while, said Rick John, district director of maintenance, operations and transportation, because the ground has a high moisture content at this time of year. Earthmovers must work at intervals to try and dry out the ground to get compaction and pass the soil tests.

The district started planning to move Adelante Continuation High School from the Riverbank High School buildings to its own campus in 2007 but it has taken this long to get funding.

The $2.6 million project will include paving the school bus yard just south of the district offices, a project that has also been needed for several years. All the yard has now is gravel that turns into a muddy mess in winter rains, noted officials.

C.T. Brayton & Sons, Inc. of Escalon is the general contractor for the Adelante High buildings. Granite Construction of Oakdale is the subcontractor for site preparation.

Campus buildings will include one wing of four classrooms, another wing containing an administrative office, multipurpose hall and restrooms and a shade structure with the main entrance being on Seventh Street.
