Preparations for the Riverbank Relay for Life on July 28-29 are well in hand.

The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28 on the Cardozo Middle School campus and the Survivors Lap take place at 9 a.m., said Sheila Doberenz, a staff member for the California Division of the American Cancer Society in Modesto.

St. Frances of Rome Church, Curves of Riverbank, Riverbank Unified School District, Galaxy 12 Theatre, and PMZ Realty are among the groups that are gathering teams, making telephone calls seeking support and obtaining donation pledges.

Karen Sanchez and Bob Arriola are leading the St. Frances of Rome Church team, Stefanie Jakobs heading a Curves contingent, Susan Taylor and Robin Hogue leading a school district team, Danielle Costa mustering Galaxy Theatre's forces and Taide Zamora heading up a PMZ Realty team.

Galaxy Theater has gathered a team of 10-12 persons, said Costa, who has captained its team several times before. She believes the relay will have between eight and 10 teams this year, a few less than in 2011.

Starting Saturday morning, the event will stretch into Sunday morning as the volunteers walk or run the track, with at least one member from each team on the track at all times during the 24-hour period.

For those interested in joining a team or donating to the cause, Doberenz can be reached at 209-404-3065 or e-mail at Sheila.Doberenz@cancer.org.
