xj rhs

Riverbank High School (RHS) Drama will present ‘Xanadu JR’ at the Black Box Theater this week. Shows are scheduled on Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $3 for students and $10 for adults.

The RHS Drama program continues its 2022-2023 season with a musical throwback to the ‘80s where magic and dance is more alive than ever. Follow Kira, a muse from ancient Greece who finds herself in Venice Beach, California in an attempt to inspire prodigy-in-the-making Sonny Malone. Will this unlikely duo overcome the obstacles in their path: forbidden love, sabotage, banishment, and a theater in decay? Catch this modern adaptation of the classic 1980s movie Xanadu starring Olivia Newton-John and music from the Electric Light Orchestra.

This 90-minute musical is suitable for all ages and features performances, costumes, scenery, props, and lighting design created by drama and art students from Riverbank High School and Cardozo Middle School. Saturday’s 2 p.m. performance features a cameo by none other than District Superintendent Christine Facella.

Xanadu JR performed by the RHS Drama program is directed by John Thiel and Zachary Brown.

This production is based on the Universal Pictures Film and screenplay by Richard Danus and Marc Rubel. Originally produced on Broadway by Robert Ahrens, Dan Vickery, Tara Smith / B. Swibel, Sara Murchison / Dale Smith and Cari Smulyan.

Xanadu JR is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized materials are supplied by Music Theatre International, New York, NY.
